Divorce in the State of Virginia
Virginia is one of the few states in the nation that requires grounds for divorce. There are four grounds for divorce:
- Adultery
- Mental or physical cruelty, including desertion
- Conviction of a felony resulting in incarceration for a period of a year or more
- Living apart in excess of one year
Ultimately, a divorce is about resolving a number of difficult issues between you and your spouse, either by coming to an agreement or by presenting the issues to a court. These issues include child custody and visitation, child support, property division and spousal support. When it is possible to come to an amicable arrangement on these issues, it can generally save you a great deal of time and money.
However, if it is necessary to resolve these issues in court, know that our firm has presented cases in divorce courts in Norfolk, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach and throughout the state of Virginia for many years. We are familiar with the issues and challenges of going to trial.
